Douglas “Doug” Andrew Garthright, Jr., 76, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

He was born October 23, 1947, in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of the late Douglas Andrew Garthright, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Yagodic Garthright.

He attended Deep Creek Baptist Church. After high school graduation, Mr. Gathright proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He held multiple positions with Weaver Chemical Company, Dominion Energy as well as General Electric Company. He retired from Babcock & Wilcox as the Human Resource and Safety Coordinator in 2015.

Doug loved all kinds of music, nature, rock collecting, going to the OBX and traveling to Bath County. He loved to attend to his bird feeders and watch the birds arrive. Doug also enjoyed bowling, dancing, and watching football games.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Janet Shifflett-Garthright of Chesapeake; a son, Chris; a daughter, Bethany (Paul), stepchildren, Lee, Kathi (Allen) and Melvin (Missy); grandson, Grayson; Step grandchildren, Whitney (Mitchell), and Landon

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Healing Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Goforth officiating. Interment will be in Union Chapel Cemetery, Hot Springs, Virginia.

Pallbearers will be Landon Hensley, Mitchell Stinespring, Chappie Chaplin, Bob Jenkins, Bob Andrews, and Wayne Andrews.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 1:00 -2:00 p.m. at the church.
