Joan Laurel Phelps, 78, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018 at her residence.

She was born May 3, 1940 in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Dwight Holland Phelps and Beulah June Lomis Phelps.

Mrs. Phelps was the former owner and operator of Marsh Tacky Tavern Inn in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and loved working in her yard.

She is survived by two children, Dimitrius “Jimmy The Greek” Vourvoulias of Hot Springs and Laurel Lee Carelias and husband George of Ellijay, Georgia; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a brother, Dwight Phelps of Pearson, Florida.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Lee Altizer officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the funeral home.
