Frederick “Uncle Fred” Elmore Pierce, 81, of Hot Springs, Virginia, passed away Monday, June 24, 2024, at the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center in Clifton Forge, Virginia.
He was born June 25, 1942, in Roanoke, Virginia, the son of the late Fred McElwee and Lucille Keyser McElwee. Fred was married to the late Verna Kathleen Pierce, his wife of 44 years, who preceded him in death on December 15, 2009.
He retired as the Regional Manager from Allied Van Lines. Prior to that he worked for Air France as a Cargo Agent from 1966-1974. He was stationed at JFK Airport in New York from 1969-1972 and Chicago O’Hare International Airport from 1972-1974.
In 1958 he joined the “Sophisticated Seven” where he played the saxophone, until he left home in 1963. The group performed at the Moose Lodge every Saturday night as well as area proms. Fred was a member of the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) for 38 years. When Fred moved to Bath County, he joined Eden Church, where he was a faithful and dedicated member. Fred loved to travel the world and never missed the opportunity to explore new places.
He is survived by his sister, Joyce Ryder & husband Don of Hot Springs; step-granddaughter, Beth Zarantonello & husband Stephen of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of His Life will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 27, 2024, at McLaughlin & Young Funeral with Pastor Bill Gram, officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in Ferncliffe Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.
