Joseph “Joey” Allen Keyes

Joseph “Joey” Allen Keyes, Jr., 37, of 73 Peery Hollow Road, Hot Springs, Virginia, died Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs.
He was born June 11, 1974 in Hot Springs, the son of Joseph ”Joe” Allen Keyes, Sr. and Kathy Peery Keyes. Joey was an employee of the Homestead Stables since 1996 where he worked as a trail guide and stable hand. He was a 1993 graduate of Bath County High School. He enjoyed horses, scuba diving and riding his Harley. He loved working with computers and he loved children.
He is survived by his parents, Joe & Kathy Keyes of Hot Springs; his girlfriend, Ethel Giese of Hot Springs; his brother, Bill Keyes and girlfriend Hope Bennett of Hot Springs; a special nephew Michael Keyes of Hot Springs; his paternal grandmother, Thelma “Polly” Bird Chestnut & husband Johnny of Mountain Grove; was a father figure to Tonia, Melissa, Christina, Tina, Chartarra and Breezy; a grandfather figure to Destiny, Justice, Laila, Siera, Skyla, Kyra, Tyler, Gwendolyn, Ashlynn “Ashy”, Lilly and Blake; aunts and uncles, Billy G. & Patricia Peery, Jr., Margaret & Tony Torr, Shirley & Peter Lytwyn, Debbie & Brian Javins and Sandy Keyes; cousins, Amy Peery Phillips & husband Rocklynn J., Adam Lytwyn, Ian Lytwyn, Nick Javins, Alex Javins, Alston Keyes, Weston Keyes, Issac & Nate Phillips; his beloved dogs and buddies, Dover & Katie.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Billy G. Peery, Sr. & Shirley Redman Peery; his paternal grandfather, Buford N. Keyes; and an uncle, Jeffrey Keyes.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church with Nancy Hubbard officiating. Interment will be in Union Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Hooker, Robbie Chestnut, Ricky Hooker, James Woodzell, Randy Robertson, Mike Burns, Scottie Duncan and Kirk Shaffier. Honorary Pallbearers will be the employees of the Homestead Stables. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hot Springs Rescue Squad, P.O. Box N, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445.

  1. Very sorry to hear about Joey’s passing. I was a classmate of his up through Valley Elementary and BCHS. He was a good fellow, and I wish his family and friends God’s comfort and peace during this difficult time. My sincere condolences,

    I’m so sorry to learn of Joey’s death. Even though I never met him, I felt like I knew him because of corresponding with your Mom, Shirley, through the years from birth through his high school years.
