Virginia O’Farrell Burruss, 96, of Hot Springs, Virginia died peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, August 30th, 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland. Virginia was a lifetime resident of Hot Springs. For the past year, Virginia made her home with her daughter in Maryland.
She was born July 20th, 1920 in Danville, Pennsylvania, the eldest daughter of the late Michael O’Farrell and Grace Ware O’Farrell of Mountain Grove, Virginia. She is survived by her sister, Margaret O’Farrell Vergason of Reston, Virginia.
Virginia was a homemaker and former school teacher who attended Longwood College. She was a member of Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church and the Bath County Historical Society.
Loving wife to the late Robert Powell Burruss, beloved mother to Kathaleen “Kitty” Scott and Virginia “Pixie” Toggweiler, as well as a late son, Robert Michael, devoted grandmother to her adoring grandchildren Allison Scott, Ashley Scott, Robert Toggweiler and Sarah Toggweiler, mother-in-law of Timothy Scott and Mike Toggweiler and great grandmother to August “Gus” Ritzcovan. Throughout her life she instilled in her children, friends and grandchildren a fierce commitment to family, and always radiated a love of life, audacious taste in jewelry, a thirst for interesting conversation and a sparkle in her eye when she spoke of her cherished farm in Bath County. She was a kind friend to all and held a special place in her heart for Hot Springs and the community that surrounds it.
Pallbearers to be: Bill Wilson, Matt Quantz, John Mitchell, Mike Toggweiler, Robert Toggweiler, Timothy Scott, Christopher Ritzcovan and Nimai Pandit.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Dr. Gary Pillow officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington, Virginia. The family will welcome friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 5th at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.
