Zona Warwick Landes, 84, of 44 Bolar Draft Rd, Mountain Grove, Virginia passed away Friday, November 29, 2013 at her residence.
She was born March 11, 1929 in Marlinton, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Warwick Landes and Juanita Ryder Landes.
Mrs. Landes was a retired school teacher from the Bath County School System. She taught in several school systems in her 47 year career.
She was a 1946 graduate from Valley High School where she was the Class Salutatorian. In 1951 she graduated from Madison College. She earned her Master’s Degree from University of Virginia. She loved teaching school and Sunday School. She enjoyed flowers of all kinds and her sports including the Bath County Chargers, any of the UVA sports, the Dallas Cowboys, and watching golf. She did beautiful embroidery and made some of the finest jellies, apple butter and cookies. She was a collector of elephant figurines. She was a member of the Mountain Grove United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, served on the administrative board, arranged the flowers for services, was a member of the United Methodist Women where she did the devotionals for many years, and contributed to the life of the church in many other ways including organizing the Easter and Christmas programs. She was a wonderful sister, teacher, friend, devoted aunt and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by a sister, Carolyn Boyer and husband Richard of Mt. Grove; a niece, Cynthia Choate; nephews Philip Boyer and Andrew Boyer; great nieces, Channing Choate, Lauren Rushton and Joanna Boyer; great nephews, Shane Poplin, Ty Boyer, Joshua Boyer, Nicholas Choate, Conner Choate and Jonathan Boyer; and a great great niece, Hannah Poplin.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Landes and two brothers Bill and Jerry Landes.
A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the Mountain Grove United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Boyer and Pastor Randy Simms officiating. Interment will be in the Mountain Grove Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wayne Williams, Julian Brinkley, M. G. O’Farrell, Craig Buzzard, Steve Gibson, Kirby Buzzard, Jon Trees and Danny Hicks.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 -7:00 PM Wednesday evening at McLaughlin and Young Funeral Home.

12/10/13 – Dick and Carolyn: Tony and I wish we could have been there for the funeral, but Tony had to work everyday until December 31, 2013. We both loved Zona.
