AnitaAnita Paige Layton McElwee, 81, of Staunton, Virginia died Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at King’s Daughters Nursing Home.

She was born September 6, 1934 in Hot Springs, Virginia, the daughter of the late Donnie Foeman Layton and Mabel Cameron Donovan Layton.

Anita was retired from the Homestead Resort where she worked as a waitress at Café Albert.  She also worked as a baby sitter for many years.

She truly loved children and also enjoyed the outdoors and shopping.

Anita is survived by a daughter, Sandra Leigh McElwee and companion Michael Wayne Hooker of Hot Springs, Virginia; 2 sisters, Delma LaClair of Staunton, Virginia, Ernie Hoover of Covington, Virginia; a number of nieces and nephews; and a family dog, Half Pint.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Michael McElwee, who preceded her in death on March 19, 1987; a sister, Jodi McMahon; a brother, Donis “Buddy” Layton; a sister-in-law, Mary Layton; and a brother-in-law, Frankie “Frog” LaClair.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at Union Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Donald Lee Altizer officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary or the Hot Springs Rescue Squad.

  1. I was so saddened by the death of my dear friend Anita. She was truly a good person. I worked with her at Cafe Albert and we all had a blast.
