IMG_0737Button Guinnett “B.G.” McElwee, Jr., 86, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs, Virginia.

He was born October 7, 1931 in Hot Springs, the son of the late Button Guinnett McElwee, Sr. and Christine Griffith Lucas McElwee.

He was a veteran of the US Navy having served during the Korean War.

Mr. McElwee retired December 1, 1995 from the Homestead Resort Commissary Department. He was a loyal fan of the Washington Redskins and the Bath County Chargers, and a longtime member of Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Marie McElwee, whom he married on November 10, 1960; two children, Richard McElwee of Salem, Virginia and Christine McElwee of Roanoke, Virginia; two grandchildren, Kelly Altizer & husband Damin of Crozet, Virginia and Brittany McElwee & husband Michael Duff of Charlottesville, Virginia; a great grandchild, Kate Hays Altizer of Crozet; a special cousin, Kay Sykes of Knoxville, Tennessee; three sisters-in-law, Ina Turner & husband Eddie, Betty Schooler and Faye Harold; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert “Stack” McElwee and a sister-in-law, Carol McElwee, two brothers-in-laws, Paul Schooler and Paul Harold.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 19, 2018 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Lorrie Aikens officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Susan Phillips, P.O. Box 251, Warm Springs, Virginia 24484 OR the charity of your choice.

  3. So very sorry for this horrendous loss!
    B.G. was quite the pistol! You could always encounter him at all of the sporting events of the Bath County Chargers. His love of sports was contagious! Much love to Rachel, Richard Allen & Christie as well as the entire extended family, I know B.G. will be dearly missed!
