Clifton Wayne Carpenter, 74, of Hot Springs, Virginia died Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Bath Community Hospital.

He was born May 11, 1942 in Bath County, the son of the late Eddie Harper Carpenter and Ollie Gay Wolfe Carpenter.

Clifton was a retired plumber for the Homestead Resort.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He loved working, mowing, hunting, and visiting with his friends.

Clifton is survived by  his wife of 53 years, Janet Delores Hodge Carpenter of Hot Springs; children: Carolyn Loan of Hot Springs & special friend Thomas Fitch of Clifton Forge, Kathy Hurley & special friend Jeff Willis of Callaway;  grandchildren: Leah Boyce of Fairmont, WV, Kayla Jones of Zebulon, NC, Ilene Hurley of Callaway; great grandchildren: Serena Boyce of Fairmont, WV; brothers: Donald R. Carpenter & wife Peggy of Hot Springs, James V. Carpenter & wife Darlene of Hot Springs; sisters: Ruby Lowry of Hot Springs, Gloria Spitler of Chesapeake, Nancy Hawks & husband Duane of Hot Springs, Joyce Smith & husband Charlie of Hot Springs; other; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son: Scott Allen Carpenter; 3 brothers: Gene, Willie, and Bedford Carpenter, and a sister: Charlotte Campbell.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday August 21, 2016 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Altizer and Pastor David George officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mark Hepler, Lonnie Martin, Roger Liptrap, Donald Williams, Josh Feury, Jimmy Gillespie, and Jeff Willis.  Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Jenkins and Jerry Taylor.

The family will receive friends the night before from 6 – 7 p.m. at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hot Springs Rescue Squad or Bath Community Hospital.
