Curtis E. “Abe” Pursley
Curtis E. “Abe” Pursley, 82, of Bacova, Virginia died Monday, July 30, 2012 at Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs.
He was born April 12, 1930 in Bacova, to the late Jesse & Lena Broce Pursley. On July 20, 1951, he married Agnes B. Pursley. Prior to his retirement from Virginia Power at the Back Creek pump storage station, Abe served in the U.S. Army. During the Korean War, he received a purple heart for a combat wound inflicted by exploded shrapnel. He was a member of VFW Post 4204 and served on the Honor Guard for many years. Abe was a loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed working in his yard and fishing. He was a Member of the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church and his life’s passion was playing his mandolin and singing. A dear friend to all, he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of sixty one years, Agnes B. Pursley of Bacova; a daughter, Vicki Grutter of Bacova; a son, Edward Lee Pursley & wife Mendy of Weyers Cave, Virginia; three grandchildren, David, Briana and Kaleb; a brother, Marvin F. Pursley & wife Marie of Bacova; a sister, Edna Osborne of Weyers Cave and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Pursley.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Charles Reed officiating. Interment will be in the Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Tuning, Scott Robertson, Carson “Pete” Cauley, David Pursley, John Hart and Barrie Wolf. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Donald Myers, William Schoenthaler and Don Fike.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home in Hot Springs.

Abe was a great friend and neighbor and one who never met a stranger. He always had a joke or a funny story to tell you and you and always made your day to get to talk with him. He will be missed by so many, and a friend I will never forget. Rest in Peace Abe.

We are so sorry to hear of “Abe’ Passing. He would have had a joke about being in his own bed when his time was up.. We always looked forward to seeing him each summer in Hot Springs,laughing & smiling. “Abe ” was one of the good ones and we will miss him. Our prayers are with you all,

I had the pleasure of visiting Abe and Agnes several times as Ed’s roommate at JMU for three years. He had so many jokes to tell, listened to you, and played several instruments. I know he showed me a thing or two on guitar. My heart goes out to the family. Remember, he is always with you in your hearts and minds, and he carries on in his children and grandchildren. When you see them, you see him. Love to all, and may you find comfort during this time of loss.

I always enjoyed visits to your home when Ed and I were in college together. Abe always made the visits a great experience with his humor and mandolin playing. Abe friendship and infectious spirit across so many generations speaks volumes about what a wonderful person he was. You all are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
