Darrell R. “Jack” Hicklin, 84, of 251 Ashwood Drive, P.O. Box 925, Hot Springs, Virginia, passed away at his home Friday, May 3, 2013 after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 7, 1928 in McDowell, Virginia, the son of the late Paris P. & Maggie Ralston Hicklin. He graduated from McDowell High School and was a member of Starr Bolar United Methodist Church in Warm Springs.
Mr. Hicklin served in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1951.
Jack was a 40 year member of the Bolar Ruritan Club, serving in various offices in the local club and was Lt. Governor and Governor of the Woodrow Wilson District, Ruritan National. He attended numerous national conventions.
Having attended high school during the WWII years when opportunities were limited, Jack had a passion for coaching children in little league and was an avid sports fan himself, always rooting for the Washington Redskins. He played recreation league softball past the age of 63.
Jack loved the outdoors and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty Hodge Hicklin of Hot Springs; two sons, Frankie Hicklin & wife Tammy of Hot Springs and Darrell Hicklin & wife Jennifer of Salem, Virginia; four grandsons, Thomas Hicklin & wife Chelcie of Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi, George Hicklin & wife Maribel of Ft. Hood, Texas, Justin Dull & wife Jennifer of Spottswood and Ty Hicklin of Salem; a granddaughter, Skylar Hicklin of Salem; a sister-in-law, Nettie Lindsay & husband David of Hot Springs; and a brother-in-law, William Hodge & wife Bootsie of Hot Springs.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2013 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home in Hot Springs with the Reverend Lorrie Aikens officiating and Pastor Donald Lee Altizer assisting. Interment will follow at Jacob Cleek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be William E. Hodge, David G. Lindsay, Clyde Burns, Bobby Bogan, Lee Peery and Kenny Woodzell. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bolar Ruritan Club. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

  4. Jack was a good man. He coached me in little league. He was a mentor to a lot of young mean and you just don’t forget that.
