David Caldwell Altizer, Sr., 77, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Thursday, March 19, 2026, at his residence.

He was born September 7, 1948, in Bath County, Virginia, the son of the late Lonnie Caldwell Altizer and Emma Leona Thacker Altizer.

David retired from the Omni Homestead Resort after many years of service. He worked at the pump storage station in Mountain Grove during its construction. David was a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Virginia Chapel Church. David loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, and enjoyed cooking. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved spending time with his sons and spoiling his grandkids. David was an avid fan of Bath County High School where he enjoyed watching his grandson play for the Chargers. He played Santa Claus throughout the community and at the Homestead Resort for many years.

David is survived by three children, David Caldwell Altizer, Jr. and partner Earl Honaker, Tracy Wayne Altizer, and Lonnie Hopkins Altizer all of Hot Springs; twelve grandchildren, Nikki, Tiffany, Hunter, Asa, Ayden, Isaac, Lyric, Enzy, Sossi, and Player Altizer, Hannah and Haley Cook; four great grandchildren, Lynnleigh, Zoey, Tate, Zane; a brother, Donald Lee Altizer and wife Linda of Hot Springs, Virginia; two sisters, Iona Altizer Conner and Joyce Darlene Ellinger and husband Wayne all of Hot Springs; former wife and friend, Gail Kay Murray of Marlington, West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Altizer.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2026, at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastors Donald Lee Altizer and Bill Gram officiating. Interment will be in Jacob Cleek Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Asa Altizer, Joey Altizer, Matthew Altizer, Jonathan Ellinger, Hunter Altizer, and Donnie Altizer. Honorary pallbearers will be Ayden Altizer, Johnny Altizer, and Noah Harmon.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

    • I always talked to David in Dollar Store and Valley Supermarket. We sure will miss him. We always ended up laughing.
