Quarles 001Deacon Rudolph (Squirrel) Quarles, Sr.

Deacon Rudolph Quarles, Sr. 77, a lifelong resident of Covington, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the University of Virginia Hospital after an extended illness.
Rudolph was born on February 28, 1937 in Covington the son of the late Thomas B. and Christine Jordan Quarles. In his developing years, he was an aspiring young man who played football, was a member of the school marching band, drama club and the school newspaper editorial staff before graduating from Watson High School in 1958.
A hard working family man, he married the true love of his life, Ms. Dianne Brown in 1961 and they remained married for 53 years until his death. From that union they had five children. He had a strong work ethic and believed in providing for his family. After working at the Cavalier Restaurant he worked at Westvaco Club House, the Rayon Plant, Hercules with over thirty years of service and then AET Plant where he retired.
A man of strong Christian faith he was a lifetime member of the Wrightsville Baptist Church where he was the Superintendent of the Sunday School and was a former Chairperson of the Deacon Board. He was also a life member of the Burean Valley Baptist Association. Many Sunday afternoons, Deacon and his wife could be seen visiting evening programs at area churches.
He supported his community through his church, and as a former member and officer of the local NAACP Branch of Covington. He was a member of the Gospel Men’s Chorus. An avid fisherman he enjoyed fishing, working on cars and fixing things. He also enjoyed traveling especially to Alaska and the West Coast. He was an avid sports fan supporting his children’s and grandchildren’s athletic and academic events. He was a life coach and mentor to many young people in the community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Walter and Tyrone (Boney) Quarles.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rev. Dr. Dianne Brown Quarles; one son, Elder Rudolph Quarles, Jr. of Washington DC; four daughters, Deloris Quarles of Covington, Missionary Deborah Spencer (Llewellyn) of North Chesterfield, VA, Minister Doritha Quarles of Richmond, VA and Coach Delethea Quarles of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, William (Nakeba) Quarles, Demetrius Chapman, Phillip Foster, Destiny Spencer, Justyn Spencer and Andrew Spencer; two great grandchildren, Nalo Quarles and Davi Quarles; a brother, David Quarles of Richmond; three sisters, Shirley (Nathaniel) Scott of Neptune, NJ, Betty Carter of Covington and Pamela (Roy) Garrett of Richmond; special family members Javoline Amos, Carolyn Eason, Ophelia Thompson, Patricia Tracey, Louise Watson, Cecil Jordan, Andrew Dooley and William (Tee) Clark, Sr.; brother-in-law, Leroy (Renae) Brown of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family members.
A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 noon, Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Pine Street Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Wrightsville Baptist Church or anytime at the home on 1513 East Dolly Ann Drive. Interment will be in Alleghany Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, and James (Cheese) Smith, Aaron Brown, Joe Brown, Jr. and Devonte Laws. Honorary Pallbearers will be his Best Buddy, Elijah Brody, Eddie Goode and Steve Webb.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wrightsville Baptist Church, Sunday School Department.
