Dimitrus Evangelos “Jimmy the Greek” Vourvoulias, 65, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Saturday, January 25, 2025, at his residence.

He was born May 2, 1959, in Miami, Florida, the son of the late Evangelos D. Vourvoulias and Joan Laurel Phelps.

He was a 1978 Graduate of Bath County High School. After graduation he went to work for the Homestead Resort as a steward in the Food & Beverage Department. Jimmy loved people, whether it was his co-workers, volunteer organizations or just someone he ran into on the street, Jimmy would always strike up a conversation. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing recreational sports, especially volleyball. Later he played on a men’s basketball team. He was a founding member of the P.A.F. organization (Partners Assisted Funding at the Homestead Resort) and remained active until it dissolved in 2019. He also served on the Members Safety Committee at the Homestead. Jimmy was an avid University of Virginia Cavalier’s fan and attended many of their basketball games. He also enjoyed watching the Washington Redskins (Commanders) games on TV. Jimmy’s greatest joy came each December when he would play Santa Claus for the local Fire & Rescue Association, the Owners Club, and the Bath County Christmas Mother. He usually started prepping for this event in June and could hardly wait for it to come. He will be missed by so many as he left his legacy of a genuine friend with a big heart.

A Celebration of Jimmy’s Life will be held 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.

  9. The Greek was a special friend. I will always remember how excited he was to play men’s league basketball. I’d pick him up and he would talk all the way to the gym and back. I know the Homestead heard about every game we would play. Greek won more men’s league championships than anyone. Later in life it was great to hear him talk about men’s ignite weekend in Lynchburg. If you’re a man and haven’t heard of it look it you should go if you have a chance to. The Greek would love that! Greek you will be missed but you knew Jesus as your savior and for that reason you will live forever.

  13. Our years spent working together at the Homestead will always be some of my favorites. From you coming into the Partners Cafe and giving us girls a hard time and making us laugh to you and Eric working together in the Stewarding Dept. Those were the best of times. Jimmy, you were one of the kindest and most joyous people that we’ve ever met, and we are better for having known you. RIP, friend. You will be missed.

  19. Jimmy my good friend this is so sad that you will no longer be around for me to help you with your everyday life’s needs, to listen to your problems and to just talk…it has been a blessing to have you as a good friend…and especially the girls Kahki Jo, Zo bug, and Emmy boo (which is what you called them). And not once did you ever forget their birthday or any special occasion with a gift for them…you always said they were like your grandchildren. The girls and I appreciated everything that you did…your heart was so full of kindness to everyone that you met, and it was all about the friendship you shared. I just wish that I had taken the time sooner for what you wanted taken care of. So, rest in peace my dear friend, until we meet again, I am!!
