Elva Mae Parrotte Ryder Carpenter, 83, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Saturday, October 01, 2022, at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs.

She was born October 26, 1938, in Saranac Lake, New York, the daughter of the late Lloyd Leo Parrotte and Florence Mary Rule Parrotte.

Mrs. Carpenter was a caretaker for many patients in Bath County and the surrounding area. Prior to that she was the “first” Activities Director at the Springs Nursing Center, a position she held for 3 1/2 years.

She was a former member of the Hot Springs Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Healing Springs Baptist Church, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Hot Springs Rescue Ladies Auxiliary.

Elva was married to the late Eugene Harding Carpenter whom she married on February 13, 1998. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2003.

She is survived by three children, Anita Gail Troyer & husband Michael of Healing Springs, Virginia, Lane Ryder, Jr. of Covington, Virginia, and Lorne “Chip” Ryder of Glasglow, Kentucky; eight step-children, Krystle Foster, Jewel Simms, Mary Ann McCutchen, Betty L. Simms, Eugene E. Carpenter, Robert M. Carpenter, Amelia Beaver, Laura Barrett; twenty nine grandchildren;  seven great grandchildren; a brother, Irwin Edward Parrotte of Carmichael, California; and numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Lynn Sprouse who passed away on September 29, 2006; a brother, Stanley Robert Parrotte; and a sister, Virginia Heck.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 6, 2022, at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Goforth officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hugh Hite, James Carpenter, Lane Ryder, Chip Ryder, Eli Sprouse, Chaz Ryder.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 5th at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Healing Springs Baptist Church, Building Fund, 4697 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445 or The Springs Nursing Center Resident Fund, P.O. Drawer 1, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445.

  1. Elva was such a character. I worked with her at Bacova Guild years ago and she always had a smile on her face. So sorry for your loss!

  2. So very sorry to all of Elva’s family. She was once my mother-in-law and I loved her dearly. She always loved me as her own for which I was extremely grateful. I know she is in a much better place and is reunited with Rhonda and Gene as well as her immediate family members. May she rest in eternal peace.

  3. Elva was such a sweet sweet person,when she came to Bath Hospital she was sick but we sure had some good times when she got to feeling better,she liked it when I would joke and act a fool with her and I liked making her laugh,rest in peace sweetie,I sure will miss you.
