HelenHelen Ruth Thacker Baldwin, age 78, died on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs, Virginia.  She was born September 6, 1940 the daughter of the late Charles Hopkins Thacker and Margaret Hodge Thacker.

After her graduation from Valley High School, Helen worked as a secretary for the law office of Shad Solomon and the office of Al Stoneburner.  Upon her marriage to Edward (Ed) Baldwin in 1974, Helen moved to West Roxbury, Massachusetts where she resided for the next 42 years.  Helen was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for Devaney Energy in Newton, Massachusetts for many years and retired due to Ed’s health.

Helen was a devoted wife, sister and aunt.  Helen and Ed loved people and had the gift of hospitality.  They opened their home to runners in the Boston Marathon for many years.  They enjoyed traveling and especially enjoyed their annual Thanksgiving visits to Hot Springs.

Helen and Ed returned to Virginia in 2016 due to medical issues.   Sadly, Ed passed away on May 23, 2017.

Helen is survived by two sisters, Leona Thacker Altizer of Hot Springs, Virginia and Josephine Thacker of Wyandotte, Michigan; special friends, Alma and Bill Murrin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Lloyd Thacker; sisters, Thelma McComb and Charlotte May; and special brother-in-law Lonnie Altizer.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, September 30th at 2:00 p.m. at McLaughlin Young Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Lee Altizer officiating and assisted by Pastor Lorrie Aikens.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Pallbearers will be Helen’s nephews.  Friends are also welcome to visit the family any time at the home of Leona Altizer in Ashwood.

  3. Thoughts and prayers to Helen’s family. She and Ed were my neighbors here in West Roxbury, MA for many years. They attended my kids’ birthday parties – Ed always taking beautiful photos and a Helen always baking some delicious dish. Great lady – hoping she’s at peace again. – Kate B.
