Scan_20170122.jpg    Herman Lewis Peery, Jr., 90, of 139 Peery Hollow Road, Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Saturday, January 21, 2017 at his residence.

He was born October 25, 1926 in Hot Springs, Virginia, the son of the late Herman Lewis Peery, Sr. and Mamie Pauline Harold Peery.

He was retired as the Golf Pro for the Upper Cascades Course at the Homestead Resort.

In 1945 he entered the Army spending two years in the Infantry Division, one of which was spent in the European Theatre during WWII.

He was a member of Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church; and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

It was fitting that Mr. Peery would spend 42 years as the head golf pro at the Homestead Resort as he was born on the golf course! There was a house that sat on the fifth hole where his parents lived and that is where he was born. According to Mr. Peery, “that is where he had been ever since.” He started as a shop boy in 1948 and took over the duties of Caddy Master in 1952. In 1955 he was promoted to Pro. He never had an official lesson, but that did not stop him. He “knew what a good golf swing looked like.” He spent a lot of time teaching the game; having given Gerald Ford a lesson just 2 days before he became president. In 1998 he retired after 50 years of service. To this day, he holds the course record along with Pro Sam Snead.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Mae Gutshall Peery his wife of 67 years; two children, Debbie Sparks & husband Harold of Mountain Grove, Virginia and Ricky Peery & wife Janis of Salt Lake City, Utah; two grandchildren, Rick Peery and Kellen Peery both of Salt Lake City; a brother, Carl Lee Peery, Sr. & wife Charlotte of Hot Springs; a sister, Frances P. Mines of Staunton, Virginia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Danny Peery; and a brother, Bill Gray Peery, Sr.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Dr. Gary Pillow officiating. Interment will be in Union Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rick Peery, Kellen Peery, Lee Peery, Gray Peery, Jerry May, Curtis Lowry

Friends may call anytime at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church, c/o Wayne Peery, 533 Peery Hollow Road, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445 or Mt. Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422.
