John Paul Hodge, 72, of Millboro, Virginia died Sunday, April 17, 2016 at his residence.

He was born March 17, 1944 in Hot Springs, Virginia, the son of the late Lonnie Hubert Hodge and Lennia Lovisa Matilda (Franson) Hodge. He was married to the late Bonnie Sue Losh Hodge, his wife of 43 years who preceded him in death on July 26, 2013.

Mr. Hodge was employed with the Virginia Department of Transportation as an equipment operator. He was a veteran of the United States Marines.

Johnny was a member of Woodland Union Church. He was an active member of the Millboro Area Rescue Squad having held many different offices. He was one of the four members who initiated the full time rescue squad in the Millboro area. He was an honorary member of the Hot Springs Rescue Squad and was a member of the Millboro Fire Department. He was awarded the “EMT of the Year Award” by the Bath County Chamber and also received the “Citizen of the Year” by the Millboro Ruritan Club. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all.

He is survived by two children, Melissa Dawn Hodge & fiancé Jamey Wood of Staunton, Virginia, Kimberly Heffler & husband Greg of Millboro; six grandchildren, Frances Arline of Millboro, Joey Arline of Baconton, Georgia, Jennifer Arline, Christian Heffler, John Heffler and Hannah Heffler all of Millboro; a brother, Lonnie Allen Hodge & wife Ruth of Bolivia, South America; two sisters, Mavis Plecker & husband James of Millboro, Virginia and Sandra Wengerd & husband Dan of Dayton, Virginia; his mother-in-law, Mary Losh of Millboro, Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Thomas Hodge.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Woodland Union Church with Pastor David George officiating. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Staunton. Pallbearers will be Christian Heffler, John Heffler, Jamey Wood, Robert Plecker, Dale Plecker, Larry Plecker, Brandon Plogger, Keaton Hall. Honorary Pallbearers will be Members of the Millboro Area Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home in Hot Springs, Virginia.

  2. John will be missed by so many. He helped so many in the community when serving on the squad. I, too, have ran many calls during the time I lived in Millboro, with Johnny. He was so helpful to me and to my family. I will so miss him as I know everyone will. He was a really good person to have known and I feel blessed to have. My prayers and sympathies to his family and friends.
