Juanita Josephine Collins Smith, 95, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at her residence.

She was born July 22, 1928, in Bath County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Collins and Amendia Bernice May Collins.

Mrs. Smith retired as the head of the Housekeeping Department at the Cascades Inn. She was a member of Ashwood United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher and was active in church activities. She will always be remembered for the rice bags and dish cloths that she lovingly made for family and friends throughout the community. She enjoyed her flower gardens, feeding the birds, and had a veracious love of reading books. She witnessed to friends, family, and strangers, passing out hugs and whispering “I love you, but God loves you more” to anyone who would stop for a hug. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She was married to the late Burton Hornbarger Smith, her husband of 68 years, who preceded her in death on October 16, 2015.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Smith and wife Frances of Troutville, Virginia and Randy Smith and wife Della of Roanoke, Virginia; four grandchildren, Benjamin Smith, Jennifer Haddock and husband Stephen, Grayson Smith, and Sara Wright and husband Michael; a great grandchild, Aveline Grace Haddock; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends and caregivers, Linda Bailey and John McConnell of Hot Springs.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed Collins, and Ira Collins; three sisters, Nora Terry, Evelyn Lindsay, and Beulah Hardison.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Ashwood United Methodist Church with Pastor Andrew Baek officiating.

    We were sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Juanita, we all really loved her. She was always very kind and we will miss stopping by to see her from time to time.

    • Wayne, Randy and family, I am sorry to hear of the passing of your precious Mother. We often had long visits by phone while I was living in Hot Springs. She was a delight to visit. A B and I always enjoyed visiting your parents home. Prayers are with all of you for the loss of a beautiful lady.
