Mabel 2Mabel Lee Shumate Neff, 92, of Hot Springs, Virginia died Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

She was born March 24, 1925 in Mitchelltown, Virginia, the daughter of the late Kenton Fisher Shumate and Julia Martha Helmick Shumate.

Mabel graduated from Valley High School in 1943 and went on to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Department of the Army, located in the Pentagon, for six years.  She attended night classes at Strayer College and later took classes at Dabney Lancaster College.

While visiting home in 1949 she met her future husband, Waldo Thomas Neff and they were married on July 30, 1949. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1981.

After returning to Bath County, Mabel worked for the Superintendent of Welfare for several years and later retired from BB&T Bank after 31 years of service.  Upon retiring she spent the winters in Florida at Zephyr Hills Mobil Park where she was secretary for the Board of Directors.

Mabel was a member of the Healing Springs Baptist Church, as well as the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Paula K. Midock & husband Randall of Winchester, Virginia, Gregory Thomas Neff & wife Tracy of Stansbury, Utah, Richard “Rick” Phillip Neff & wife Elaine of Hot Springs; grandchildren, McKenzie Midock & husband James Wascak, Hope Midock, and Brighton Neff, Loreli Rowe & husband Sean, Danielle Bray & husband Lee; great grandchildren, Taylor Jasmin Bray, Teagan Grace Bray, Declan David Rowe and Amias Breaker Rowe; brother, Harry A. Shumate of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, brother-in-law, Kenneth Fisher of Fredericksburg, Virginia; a cousin, Lillian Smith, and many good friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Neff was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Mary S. Keyser, Virginia Ruddle, and Betty Fisher; a sister-in-law, Betty Shumate; a brother, Kemper Shumate; and a grandson, Richard Thomas Neff.

At her request, a memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 10, 2017 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor John Klink officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Healing Springs Baptist Church, 4697 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445 or to the Hot Springs Rescue Squad, P.O. Box N, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445.
