Mary Jean Butler Nelson, 74, of Hot Springs, Virginia died Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at her residence.
She was born June 20, 1943 in Butlertown, Maryland, the daughter of the late Preston Sam Butler and Alease Bruce Butler Matthews.
She retired from the Homestead Resort after many years of service as a room attendant.
She was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. She loved to cook for her family, friends, and her neighbors. She never met a stranger. She had many friends that loved her dearly. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who were so dear to her heart.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin L. Nelson and wife Jeanette of Newport News, Virginia, Derrick A. Nelson and wife Gennifer of Tolleson, Arizona; a brother; Alvin Matthews of Clinton, North Carolina; three sisters; Gloria Braxton of Hot Springs who was her care giver, Virginia Delores Stewart and husband Tommy of Warm Springs, Virginia and Bessie Matthews of Salemburg, North Carolina; a host of Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews; Special Friends, Doris Clarke, Barbara Bonney, Donald Cardwell, Euphemia Stevenson and Louise Gwynn.
She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Dorothy Lee, Kathryn Boxley and Alease Matthews, 2 brothers Stanley Matthews, Jr. and an infant brother.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Piney Grove Baptist Church with Reverend W. Ed Mansfield officiating. Interment will be in Pine Hurst Heights Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family and friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to services from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church.
