Natalie Mae Cauley, 93, of Bacova, Virginia passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at her residence.
She was born April 16, 1933, in Hot Springs, Virginia, the daughter of the late Louis Henry Polane and Elmer Kirby Polane.
Mrs. Cauley was a school teacher at Bath County Public Schools where she taught typing and shorthand for 30 years. She was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church. She was a loving mother.
She is survived by her son, Steven Wayne Cauley of Hot Springs, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome “Jerry” Polane and Ronald Polane.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the Warm Springs Cemetery with Reverend Katherine Doyle officiating.
She was my favorite teacher and I loved shorthand. So sad to hear this. Rest in Peace, Mrs. Cauley. ;(

Mrs. Cauley was my neighbor across the road from where I grew up. As a teenager, she would take me, my sister, and my brother to the Cascades Inn to go swimming in the summer, along with her son, Steven. Her father, Lewis, operated the Inn at that time. She taught me typing at Valley High School. I recently phoned her and had a nice, long talk, catching up on her life and sharing memories. My condolences to Steven and her friends.
Condolences to Steve. I never had Mrs. Cauley as a teacher but spent a lot of time at their house as Steve was one of my closest friends in school. She was always so nice and laughed at all the dumb things we did. Rest in Peace

I remember her and Buddy and the only classrooms I can recall that were connected together by an inside door. I remember the girl in front of me was typing 100 wpm and I was barely hitting 30, but she patted me on my shoulder to tell me “that’s pretty good for a guy.” It made me smile. She was wonderful.

Steven, I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was very dear, and one of my favorite coworkers at BCHS. I always admired her. You now have a very special guardian angel.
