Patricia Zan Vause Spurgeon, 81, of Hot Springs, Virginia, went to her heavenly home on Monday, May 25, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born December 29, 1944, in Florence County, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Woodrow James Vause and Lutretia Oliver Vause.
On December 20, 1975, she married the love of her life, Mike Spurgeon. They would share 50 beautiful years together.
Zan retired from the Bath County Public Library where she worked for a number of years as a librarian. She was a member of the Healing Springs Baptist Church. Zan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an avid reader and enjoyed painting. Zan loved spending time with her family, especially her great grandbabies.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Spurgeon of Hot Springs; three children, Patricia “Patty” Kittel & husband Mark of Wausau, Wisconsin, Marvin “Bo” Spurgeon of Covington, and Lutretia “Lu” Whittington and husband Justin of Covington, Virginia; grandchildren, Brooke Johnsen of Wisconsin, Clifford Johnsen IV & wife Teresa of Iowa, Sabrina Fuentes & husband Kevin of Ohio, Dominique Spurgeon & partner Ryan of Warm Springs, Callie Lendizan & husband Cody of Ohio, Kirsten Koeth of Ohio, Alyssa Williams & husband Andrew of North Carolina, Lyric of Virginia; great grandchildren, Vincent, Scarlet, Roman, Jordan, Carmen, RJ, Paisley, Gunner, Jack, Colten, Lyle, Ella, Callen, Natelie, Benjamin; a brother-in-law, Bobby Spurgeon and wife Kathy of Hot Springs; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A special thank you to the “angels” that helped us from the ACG Hospice, especially Howard, Holly, Molly, Emily, and “adopted granddaughter,” Kristen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Hill & Sandra Coker; and her mother-in-law, Marie Liptrap.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31, 2026, at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Goforth & Pastor Bobby Spurgeon officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be friends and family.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
