Robert “Bob” David Metheny, 83, of 2611 Westminister Road, Millboro, Virginia, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs, Virginia.

He was born April 21, 1927 in Kingwood, West Virginia, the son of Carl Metheny and Emma Teets Metheny.

He was married to his wife of 59 years, Constance “Connie” Corley Metheny whom he married on April 19, 1951. He worked for Ohio Edison in Trumbull County, Ohio and retired from BARC in Virginia. He worked as a caddy for the Greenbrier & Homestead Resorts Golf Courses, the Census Bureau and was a bus driver for the Bath County Senior Center.

Mr. Metheny served his country in the United States Navy from 1945-1947; The West Virginia National Guard from 1948-1949; and United States Army from 1949-1953. He was a recipient of the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the American Theatre Medal; and The Airborne Parachute Badge.

He was a member of the Millboro Christian Church. He was a Past Commander & member of the Honor Guard for the Coleman A. Brinkley Post 4204 VFW. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great, great grandfather.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Carolyn Smith & husband James of Burnsville, Virginia, Robert Michael “Mike” Metheny & wife Mary of Dumfries, Virginia, Stephen Metheny of Stanley, Virginia, Douglas Mark Metheny & wife Betty of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Anne Ady & husband Thomas of Millboro, Virginia, Gregory “Greg” Metheny & fiancé Paulette of Stanley, Virginia; 11 grandchildren, David Smith & wife Debbie, Christina Weinreber & husband Mathew, James Smith & wife Melanie, Stephanie Engle & husband Bill, Robert Michael Metheny II, Matthew Metheny & wife Erin, Sarah Cook & husband Larry, Kelly Metheny & fiancé Josh, Tommy Ady & girlfriend Megan Sensabaugh, Bobby Ady & wife Michele, & Rebekah Ady; 29 Great Grandchildren, Kelsi Combs, Tyler, Emily, Ashley & Grace Smith, Austin, Logan, Morgan, Brendan & Madison Weinreber, Mason & Ella Rose Smith, Bill & Amanda Engle, Gwyneth, Cassey & James Engle, Zachary DeVol, Melanie, McKenna, Alia & Gabriella Engle, Katie, Chad & Timmy Shifflet, Taylor Crawford, Ayden Ady, Tyler & Trevor Fullen; a great great grandchild, Lisa Marie Combs born on March 5, 2011; four brothers, Edward Metheny & wife Ruth of Reedsville, West Virginia, Alan Dale Metheny & wife Jackie of Henderson, North Carolina, Carlton Metheny & wife Carolyn of Reedsville, West Virginia, Francis Metheny of Kingwood, West Virginia; a sister, Betty Walls of Reedsville, West Virginia; a host of nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Molly.

He was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Reverend Larry Brunson officiating. Interment will be in the Metheny Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David & Jamie Smith, Tommy & Bobby Ady, and Robert & Matthew Metheny. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 1033 Curtis A. Smith Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.
