Hot Springs – Roger Kirby Braxton, 69, of Hot Springs, Virginia died Wednesday, August 07, 2013 at LewisGale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor, Virginia.
He was born February 18, 1944 in Bath County, the son of the late Beverly Leon Braxton, Sr. and Pattie Jackson Braxton. He was married to Gloria B. Braxton his wife of 49 years whom he married on December 25, 1963.
He was retired from the Homestead Resort where he worked as a chef with over 30 years of service.
Mr. Braxton was a graduate of Watson High School. He was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a long time volunteer for the Pinehurst Cemetery. He enjoyed fishing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Cheryl B. Smothers & husband Vincent of Millboro, Virginia and Latonya B. Brown of Hot Springs; four grandchildren, Shawn Cardwell, Marshelle Smothers, Xavier Smothers and Adrian Brown; two sisters, Carolyn B. Jackson of Hot Springs and Phyllis Mack & husband Donald of Alleghany County, Virginia; five sisters-in-law, Hazel Braxton of Luray, Virginia, Mary B. Nelson of Hot Springs, Delores Stewart & husband Tommy of Hot Springs, Bessie Matthews of Salemburg, North Carolina and Kathryn Boxley of South Boston, Virginia; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Dwayne Kirby Braxton; a grandson who was the appleof his eye, Zion Braxton; two brothers, Charles “Skeet” Braxton and Beverly L. Braxton, Jr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Piney Grove Baptist Church with Reverend W. Ed Mansfield officiating. Interment will be in Pinehurst Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Oscar Beale, Hall Owens, Vincent Smothers, Tommy Stewart, Woody Pettus, Donnie Essex and Xavier Smothers.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. or anytime at the home of Gloria Braxton.
Memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation, Inc., 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
