Shirley Ann Haynes Lennon, 76, of Hot Springs, Virginia, Saturday, January 18, 2013 at her son’s residence in Vienna, Virginia

She was born June 24, 1937 in Carloover, Virginia, the daughter of the late Gordon T. Haynes, Sr. and Ruth Clark Haynes. She was married to Patrick J. Lennon, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1977.

In 1947, she became a member of the Ashwood United Methodist Church and remained an active and steadfast part of that faith community throughout her life.

A graduate of Valley High School, Class of 1955, Shirley went on to attend C&O Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse. After working for several years at Fairfax Hospital, Shirley returned to Hot Springs as a nurse at the Community House Hospital. While working there, she fell in love with her future husband, Patrick J. Lennon, Sr.

Pat and Shirley were married on November 17, 1973 at Ashwood United Methodist Church and their son, Patrick J. Lennon, Jr. was born on May 30, 1977. Her husband, Pat, Sr., died four days later at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.

While raising Patrick as a single mother, Shirley continued to work at the Bath Community Hospital and then owned and managed the Homestead Linen and Children’s Shop in the Homestead Hotel. She maintained employment at a variety of jobs serving the local community until her retirement in 2012 when she was working at the Valley Supermarket in Mitchelltown

     She is survived by her son, Patrick J. Lennon, Jr., and his wife, Sarah, of Vienna, Va.; her sister and best friend Patsy Haynes Ford and her husband Tommy of Mitchelltown; four brothers and their spouses: Donald and Charlotte Haynes of Memphis, Tenn., Raymond “Pete” and Charlotte Haynes of Hot Springs, Gordon “Sonny” Jr. and Betty Haynes of Bowling Green, Ky., and Gerald “Jerry” and Sandy Haynes of Newport News; 14 nieces and nephews, and a large number of great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. In addition, she leaves behind three faithful friends who spoke with her daily: Betty Harold, Nancy Hodge, and Gail Woodzell.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Ashwood United Methodist Church with Reverend J. Lynn Wright officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2014 at Ashwood United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
