Syble Mae Hughes Scott Essex
Syble Mae Hughes Scott Essex, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend was born March 15, 1926 and passed away October 2, 2013 at her home in Yorktown, Virginia. She was married to Eugene Benjamin Essex, Sr. who preceded her in death. She was the mother of five children one of whom died at birth. Her surviving children are Sherba Essex of Yorktown, Virginia, Donald Essex and wife Darlene of Hot Springs, Virginia, Barbara Boggs of Newport, Virginia and Eugene B. Essex, Jr. and wife Janet of Madison, Wisconsin. She is survived by her brother and sister, Richard Scott and Ruth Beale of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Christopher (Carlisa) Essex, Fawn Scott, Benjamin Essex, Eric Essex and Nicholas Scott, 10 great grandchildren and her special friend Mildred Woodard of Yorktown, Virginia. Syble was born to the late John and Carrie Henry Scott in Hot Springs but grew up in Highland County, Virginia. Syble was employed by private families and she was also a self employed seamstress.
In 1979 Syble left Hot Springs and resided with Sherba in Columbus, Ohio where she ran Sherba’s Air Force Recruiting Office. Syble was recognized for this effort by the Commanding General of U.S. Air Force Recruiting Service. Syble and Sherba were reassigned to March Air Force Base, California. Syble was a volunteer at the Base Family Services and was recognized as volunteer of the month and quarter. Sherba retired in 1989 and they relocated to Alexandria where they resided for 15 years. Syble made a home for herself and Sherba. When Sherba retired from the federal government they relocated to Yorktown, Virginia where they had built a home. Syble and Sherba were active in the Disabled American Veterans. Syble served as an officer in Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Syble was a participant in the Riverside PACE Program at Newport News, Virginia for seniors. She loved PACE and was much loved at PACE . Syble loved the U.S. Air Force and being part of the Air Force Family. When Sylbe lived in Hot Springs she was a member of the Janie Porter Barrett Club.
She was famous for her cooking and baking fruitcakes. She once made a fruitcake that was raffled off for $205 for charity. Syble had a long and happy life visiting Barbara when she lived in West Virginia, Donnie and Darlene in Hot Springs, and Eugene and Janet in Wisconsin, Georgia and Mississippi.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 7, 2013 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
